The North Central Research Station (NCRS) conducts
research in support of the Forest Service mission to achieve quality land
management under the sustainable multiple-use management concept to meet the
diverse needs of people. As part of
this mission, the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA)
program collects and analyzes data to monitor the nation’s forests and
woodlands.
The National Resources
Inventory (NRI) program of the Natural
Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) monitors the state of the nation’s
soils resources, especially on agricultural and range lands. Although measurement methods and
sampling frames are very different, both programs are developing annual
inventory systems to better detect trends land use and ecosystem health,
evaluate effectiveness of public policies, guide sustainable development, and
forecast alternative future conditions. This NRIAI position is assigned to
the NCRS to technically coordinate projects that explore potential synergies by
combining FIA and NRI data.
The Forest Inventory and Analysis
Unit conducts periodic forest resource inventories and evaluations to:
- Collect and compile forest resource data for periodic national, regional,
and state assessments.
- Analyze past, current, and projected trends of forest resources as they
affect the Region's economic and social well being.
- Relate the use of forest resources to resource supplies, and develop new
and improved statistical designs.
- Conduct special analyses of specific resource issues and concerns.
